Making Yourself Free
We worry about student comfort.
Learning should be fun! Comfort Matters, Student comfort isn't just about comfortable chairs, if students feel comfortable, students will work and perform better.
Rapport between the faculty and students is important, but equally important is rapport between students. In a classroom with students from many cultures, this can often be a difficult feat.

Many students have never traveled outside of their state or city or have never interacted with other cultures before. In order for a classroom to be a safe place for students to practice learning, every students need to feel comfortable with each other. Human beings as individuals have varied personality traits and unique nature. Some students are extremely shy, especially with opposite sex- who hesitate opening up and are quite reserved in a group whereas some are extroverts - exactly opposite to the other, these students share their thoughts openly among groups, are more social and show confidence in their attitude.

There is an interesting concept called "breaking the ice" which means one of the two strangers breaks the silence and initiates a conversation.

At SRM we conduct interactive games, exercises, debates and group talks amongst students which includes male and females to make everyone comfortable with each other, so Learning becomes fun!

I honestly think it is better to be a failure at something you love than to be a success at something you hate.

Environment class

Is Your School or Classroom a Comfortable Place to Learn?

Nothing is more important than making a classroom environment relaxed and comfortable for everyone to communicate with ease, this will significantly affect students learning, productivity, and creativity.

Respect to everyone is the foundation for a successful classroom environment. We ensure a strong community classroom environment to established maximum learning to take place.

Introduction

What Is Acting?

  1. This is the question that we should first understand. Is acting "Being someone else", playing a character," to "Being real”?
    The answer is No

  2. "What Is A Novel?"
Is it "A story?" If the answer is YES, then what is a stage play?" is it again, "A story." ?
    "What Is A Screen Play? "it's "A story." ?
And what is a TV commercial? Is it; "A mini story."?
"If all these things are stories, then who is telling the story?" "The actor?" "Wrong." "The writer?" "Wrong." "The characters?" "Yeah !!! Got It".

The story is told by the characters and since we, as actors, are portraying (acting as, not like) the characters, could we not say that acting is storytelling?

Acting is engaging your imagination to the point where you can sensually believe the circumstances given to you in a script. With trust in the circumstances, you can begin to viscerally understand (that is, in the body rather than the mind) the motivations of a character and bring life to it without effort or artifice. An actor's job is to make the story real to himself and to the audience.

At SRM, we believe that acting is a process that can be learned and practiced by anyone at any age.

Defeat is not the worst of failures. Not to have tried is the true failure.

Expression

Although we know what facial expressions mean, in life we tend to mask much of our emotions.
On stage or screen, what's happening on your face is as equally important as your voice and your body movement.

Your facial expressions can tell the audience exactly what you're thinking without saying a word.
By learning muscle control techniques and practicing thoroughly, you'll be ahead of the game when acting on stage or screen.

It is important to identify how many different faces you can make to express the same emotion.

At SRM, Students are precisely trained on practicing different emotions such as love, excitement, wonder, Contempt, Sadness, Anger, Fear, Surprise, Pain, Disgust, Mocker, Doubt, Unfamiliarity, Concentration, Worry, Determination, Embarrassment, Self-Thinking, Stupidity, Boredom, Pity, Interest, and sadness. This translates to movies, depending on the character and genre you're playing.

It's all about the conflict, the interior feelings and context against the observed expression.

Mime
Mime is the silent art of acting out a scene or expressing feelings with gestures and facial expressions. Although many people think of the French when they think of this art, mime as entertainment dates back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. It was then popular in Italy before it reached France, although it was so popular in France that schools were established and traditions of great French mimes followed. Modern American Mime is very different from the French version.

Mimes must have the bodies of gymnasts, minds of actors, and hearts of poets

SRM Film School conducts MIME training with its uniquely crafted techniques by eminent MIME theater trainers with complete public interaction.

Below are just few thinks we cover in MIME

  • Dress like a mime

  • Grab a rope MIME

  • Pretend to be in a box

  • Walk in place MIME

  • Use your body to talk

  • Feel the glass MIME

  • Take on the wind

  • Make the mime interesting

  • Start with basic mime techniques

  • Feel the temperature

  • Mime Eating.

Develop success from failures. Discouragement and failure are two of the surest stepping stones to success.

Object Research/Permanence

Object Research/permanence is the understanding that objects continue to exist even when they cannot be observed (seen, heard, touched, smelled or sensed in any way).

This is a fundamental concept studied in the field of developmental psychology, the subfield of psychology. We work on you to master this technique, it helps the actor to a great extent during auditions test. Example : Casting director may ask you to assume you holding a cup of coffee and keeping it on the table while you deliver the dialogue.

Animal Movement

Movement as an actor is vital when creating a character. Not only is the movement of your body important to help establish the credibility of a character, but movement with purpose and knowledge establish a sense of confidence and self-awareness to the audience, which helps convey a character that is not defined nor hindered by the fear or worry of its performer.

The "Movement Derived from Animals" it requires actors to forgo inhibitions and truly transform their movements. If you are a nervous actor, use this opportunity to finally escape from your jail of worry and fear. You are in a safe haven. You can take chances and make mistakes. Forgo your sense of being an "actor" or "human" and focus your entire being on becoming a particular animal.

Transform from human to animal is considered one of the toughest acting techniques.

Story Telling

Storytelling is done through characters, Storytelling is the oldest form of entertainment known to man. The actor's first responsibility is to the story. The actor's second responsibility is to use his imagination to create his character. The actor's third responsibility is to lend the character his equipment then get out of the way and let the character tell the story.

How many ways can YOU tell a story? Create one from a prop? Act out a story without any words? Tell a story back in your own style to a partner who has told one to you? Maybe cast the characters of your story and direct it as a play!

We use any old memory from student's life or a favorite folktale or fable. We at SRM help students to imagine acting out tales and having fun!

In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.

Diction

Any student who is serious about the craft should do vocal work on a regular basis. The voice is a wonderful instrument of expression but only to the extent that emotions are allowed to ride upon the melody of sound. If you mumble, run your words together, or are hard to understand you are going to make it difficult for a director to cast you.

To tell the story of the script, actors have to be heard and understood. That doesn’t just happen. It is your job as an actor to insure that your body is sending the right message and that your voice and diction are communicating the language and your intentions.

The voice is a reed instrument and should be capable of many different nuances in expression.

For example, if you sound the same when your character is choked up over some traumatic event as you do when they are at peace, what is there to watch?

We help our student to Clearly Speaking Consonants and Vowels, Eliminating Regional Accents, Seeking Professional.

Below are the lists of few exercises that we follow in the classroom for diction enhancement.

  • Fast to slow tempo

  • Breathing control.

  • Soft to loud sound

  • Spontaneous sound - whatever comes out.

  • Slow to fast tempo

  • High to low notes

  • Repeat sound in short bursts

  • Break the tempo

  • Low to high notes

  • Repeat sound, held as long as breath permits

Imagination

An actor develops his imagination by first observing the world around him in very specific details. He can then create specific images in his mind in order to surround himself with things that are true to him on stage/screen. If he succeeds, the audience will see through his eyes.

A great actor can bring us to tears without saying a word. What makes the actor great? "Total Physical Awareness" - it's what every actor needs to seize the creative moment and steal the show.

We have designed some inconceivable games which are incredibly useful to enhance your imagination skills, it is not just acting or warm-up games - many games can be played to increase performance or creative skills. Our students work individually or with others to accomplish the goal of the game, and if the goal is not accomplished at the first try, the participants have still learns a lot from the experience.

Dialogue Delivery

Emotions and voice inflections change the way the audience hears a certain line. One line can be delivered in various ways to evoke completely different emotions.

Directing an actor in line delivery is an essential skill for playwright. Many students find the process of utilizing inner images while delivering dialogue to be difficult. Even the process of creating inner images can be almost impossible for some students.

It is important to know how the dialogue should be delivered to give the maximum effect. Without know about the proper dialogue delivery method a good script goes waste and unnoticed.

Even after decades, audience remembers some movie just because of the powerful dialogues.

Example : Gabbar's Dialogue from Sholay (Kitne Aadmi The)
K-K-K-Kiran from movie Darr

Our specially designed dialogue delivery modules help students to deliver positive and negative dialogue effectively with ease.

Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.

Science of Acting

The origins of acting are in the act of remembering. Acting may have begun as early as 4000 BC when Egyptian actor-priests worshipped the memory of the dead

New developments in acting have continued to emerge from the work of individuals and small groups operating outside the commercial theater..

We at SRM believe that every human being has some or the other quality in them which is unique, and we work hard to identify that unique skill within the actor and then work on that to master the art.

Playback/lip-sync

For an actor, sync words with lip movement are very crucial, in film production lip synching are often parts of the post-production phase.

Actor need to practice this thoroughly, improper lip-sync is also known in the industry as "lip synch error" and it can be very disruptive to your viewers if you make errors during playback. In the case of live concert performances, lip-synching is a commonly used shortcut.

Without proper rehearsal or training playback/lip-sync looks artificial to your audience.

Theory

Theory explains how some aspect of human behavior or performance is organized. It thus enables us to make predictions about that behavior.

All classroom training activity are documented for future reference, notes are taken by students and are analyzed by our trainers. We believe theory is as important as practical, theory provides concepts to name what we observe and to explain relationships between concepts.

Theory allows us to explain what we see and to figure out how to bring about change. Theory is a tool that enables us to identify a problem and to plan a means for altering the situation.

Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.

Memory

Lack of memorizing skills is one of the major reasons for rejections during the audition tests.
Many scripts given in the auditions are quite large and it becomes just impossible for some students to remember those lines when the camera is focused on them.

An established actor from the industry may get the leverage of multiple takes to say the dialogue exactly the way it is written during the audition test. For a new artist, it's quite possible that he may never get a second change.

Memory improvement is part of this memory game, the process can be done with few steps that can be easy and performed effortlessly. How to remember things is only a technique that you need to utilize. A strong memory depends on the health and vitality of your brain, memory really matter when it comes to film auditions.

At SRM Film School we follow a specific and carefully designed module during the training process which helps our students to remember scripts and dialogues easily.

Building a character

As an actor, you must be able to create a character. This is what we call, Character Advancement.

We see characters in movies and television every day and often forget that what we are watching is fictional. On the other hand, there are certain actors who we see that are clearly "acting" and not living the life of the character. To portray our character realistically, we must first flesh out the thoughts, feelings, and backgrounds of who they are.

Few points we cover in this modules are

  • Understanding the background and Circumstances

  • Memorization and Delivery

  • Decisions & Pronunciation of the character

  • Becoming the Character

  • This portion of our module with help you to first create Characters for a Story in your mind and soul and then perform flawlessly.

Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.

Body Language

This one of the most important part in acting, without body language you are not an actor but robot.

Psychologists believe non-verbal communication reveals more than the words we speak. Therefore, body language for actors is very important.

When it comes to acting, sometimes the way you carry yourself can communicate far more than the words that come out of your mouth. Our emotions, feelings, motives, and thoughts are expressed by the changes in our facial expressions, gestures, posture and body position.

Body language is very much a subconscious activity, teaching fledgling actors about proper body language is challenging because it involves breaking old habits and mannerisms.

SRM Film school works on students on fundamental tips that, with practice, will help our students to improve their non-verbal communication both on the stage and on the screen.

Action & Dance

Today's world of Acting demands actors to have dancing and action skills.
Dance: Some students seem like natural performers. They know how to "work a crowd," they dance with energy, and seem to move with joy. At SRM, we teach how not to dance alone, even in a solo, how to include the audience in your performance. It's important to Make eye contact, direct your energy to one person within the audience or project your energy to the others around you, and use or respond to the energy of others give to you.

Action: Action/fight is also considered vital key for success in acting, Some actors become famous by their fighting and stunt skills and not for their acting skills,

Example: Bruce Lee, Tony jaa, Jackie chan etc.

Fight scenes can be quite challenging for actors. SRM teaches the complex technique to execute a complicated series of moves, giving the appearance of harming another person or getting hurt himself. Thousands of actors portray 'tough guy' characters, but only a few possess the discipline and technique to actually stand toe-to-toe with a legit mixed martial artist.

Don't aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in, and it will come naturally.

Different methods of acting.

Below are the lists of some world famous acting method, you may be wondering what is so special about these methods. They are nothing but they are named for the acting instructor that made it famous. Each technique has something unique to offer you and what we do is to help you choose best for you.

  • Meisner Technique

  • Michael Chekhov Technique

  • Lee Strasberg Method

  • Brecht Technique

  • Stanislavski's system

  • Stella Adler Technique

  • Viola Spolin Technique

  • Jerzy Grotowski Technique

  • Method Acting Technique

  • Meyerhold Technique

  • Keith Johnstone Technique

  • Augusto Boal Technique

Story building exercise.

Improvisation is a picture of a character or a scene without rehearsal or preparation. You will make up the character, the line and the action as you go along without a formal script. Improvisation is really good way to open up the mind of an actor, and is one of the best foundations an actor can have for rehearsal and the creation of believable character.
At SRM we conduct storing building exercise in a group pair or solo, whichever is more challenging for the student.
Groups Of Five/ Six

  1. Word By Word. To encourage spontaneity, avoid "domination".

  2. Word By Word (may avoiding adjectives). To make students aware that the story moves faster without delaying adjectives/adverbs.

  3. Phrase By Phrase Development and responsibility.

  4. Phrase By Phrase Conveying Action. Moving the action forward.

  5. [Fortunately, Unfortunately] Building on a given situation.

  6. Yes, But. adding on, exploring, passing on...also exploring backwards in time.

Pairs

  1. Exploring A Statement: adding a statement to deepen and widen....no questions allowed eg Well he would do wouldn't he? No story telling!!! Development: unrelated statements that eventually tie together.

  2. Tell Me About The Or Explain About The add a noun, the partner listens while the improviser develops the idea.

  3. Never Mind That as above, except that the partner breaks in to redirect the activity to something else mentioned in the improv.

  4. No You Didn't similar, but the improviser is then forced to offer alternatives.

  5. Nonsense Lecture. Words And Movement

    a) Stories With Action: tell part of story, add action, stand in front of someone, they then move to another, tell and add, other stories begin to be told, with actions, until half the group is telling at one time.
    b) Word By Word Exploration With Action. In pairs.

Solo Work

  1. Encountering Problems Complicating a task to make it more interesting
  2. Changing The Mime
  3. Lateral Mime. As many uses as possible of the object
  4. Moving From Point To Point with obstacles, barriers
  5. A Journey Across The Palm Of The Hand.
  6. Interruptions. Going to bed. Drinking coffee at a restaurant. Opening the front door. But never quite Managing it.
  7. The Informer Making a journey as an informer... Varied obstacles, secret routes, unexpected hazards.
  8. Through The Door Deal with the situation as they find it developing on the other side of the door. Allowing to Happen rather than planning the ideas. If you are not willing to risk the usual you will have to settle for the ordinary.

If you are not willing to risk the usual you will have to settle for the ordinary.

Reactions
It has been said that physical movements and choices relay more information to your fellow actors than dialogue as your body has a way of conveying a wide range of emotions and intentions.

A good actor does not wait until the end of the other person's dialogue to emotionally begin to react. True emotional reaction occurs at various and ever-changing moments during a listener's and looker's reception of dialogue.

As a professional actor, you must learn how to use your physical movements to influence emotional reactions from your fellow actors.

Although the script may dictate your character is not to say anything until the other character's dialogue is over, remember this: although your dialogue takes an extended time as it makes its indirect path from your inner impulse to brain to mouth, your emotional response, and its non-verbal outer manifestations like movement, the look on one's face, the shift of our posture, the formation of new ideas, etc., occur at different points in the other person's conversation.

Although scripts (and courtesy to other actors who are speaking) may dictate a delay in the verbal response until the other character's dialogue is over; this does not necessarily mean you should put a feeling response on hold. The complex, fluid multiple leveled reality of stimulus/synapse/response dictates a continuing state of feeling--and non-verbally reacting--during listening and looking.

Remember:The audience is watching both sides of an acting conflict. The audience knows the rhythm of real interactive life, as they know the rhythm of an interactive badminton game: they know each player in a real game is reacting to the other's approach toward the shuttlecock even although the actual return-of-shot (or return of dialogue) does not occur until sometime in the future. Good performances occur in this spontaneous reactive and interactive interdependence...or they will be rejected by the audience.
Camera Knowledge
You may know a lot about video and have no fear of getting in front of a camera, but you may have absolutely no idea what you need to do to look good on camera when you actually get in front of the lens.

Does the prospect of being on video make you nervous? Relax, you have nothing to worry about. No one is expecting you to look like Salman Khan or Kareena Kapoor.

Almost every actor comes to film acting concerned that before he or she tackles the world of film and television acting, she or he must understand the difference between on-camera acting and stage acting. Unless this difference is clear, the actor fears she might go in the direction of a "theatrical" performance, and who wants that. And this concern can outweigh any concern regarding understanding the circumstances of the story or the character. Keeping it real is the battle cry, and that is always synonymous in most actors' minds with keeping it small and keeping it safe. Oh well.
Acting for the camera

In film and TV acting, you often do not have the liberty of live spectators giving you comment /criticism of any kind. Instead of a theater full of spectators, your spectators is just a camera, the camera operator, the director, sound, lights, and makeup technicians who happen to be standing around at the time. This precisely means that you would have to use your imagination and assume that the cameraman staring at you is actually your ex-lover, or that the strict look on the director's face is actually the pleasant face of your best friend. When you play to the camera, you have to project emotions to the unblinking eye of the camera.

To help you "play to the camera," few ideas that we ask our students to keep in mind:

  • Know where the camera (or cameras) is at all times. You may be able to give the best performance of your lifetime, but it will be useless if the camera can't see your face.

  • Know what the camera is trying to capture. If the camera is capturing a long shot of you off in the distance, concentrating on arching your eyebrow to convey emotion will just be a waste of time since the camera won't be able to see it.

  • Know where the other actors and props are located in relation to the camera. If you step too far forward or back, your body or a simple gesture, such as waving your hand, can block the camera's view of another actor.

Make Up
Beauty make-up may sound like an artless thing to most young actors but in fact it is the most standard make-up needed for any actor within a scene. The camera is a lens that can see every pore within someone's face.

By having a make-up artist to be on set to apply simple beauty make-up you can ensure that everyone in front of the camera looks beautiful or ugly depending on the character. This is also important to lighting as lighting can magnify the flaws in someone's facial features without the help of make-up.

Unlike live theatre, film is a medium in which the subtle movements in an actor's face can tell a story and the absence of make-up can only draw attention to something that you would rather be left hidden. Their job is to make the actor look good, or the special effect to look real. Not only that, but the makeup artist is in the talent's personal space much of the time, and they need to professionalism and personality to quickly read and connect with actors.

Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life - think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success.

Audition
Audition is the gateway to enter Bollywood, for every single character that you see on television or feature film are there after clearing some or the other audition tests conducted by casting directors or directors

At SRM Film School, we have invested many years of creative growth, experience, and accomplishment to establish an environment where expansion of every student's expression can take place. We make a strong initial contact with all of our students. Our endeavor is to make each student feel that he or she belongs to this industry. Once this acceptance is established, we work through a series of imaginative story, games, and exercises that opens the door for our students to truly understand what it takes to excel in this highly competitive field and for them to polish upon their skills that give them the competitive edge over their peers.

In our energetic, unique and creative teaching environment, we encourage our students of all ages to explore the world around them, expressing their individual uniqueness, talent and feeling of self-worth in a safe environment.

We open the doors to you to share in our joy of each and every student who creates magic on an empty stage. Embrace your dream.

Our students not only learn acting with fun but also get opportunities that most others can just dream of. They get the opportunities to see live auditions, which are held in our own film school on regular basis. Watching live auditions give our students tremendous confidence and knowledge and make them feel at home when they themselves are part of it.
