The one-year Diploma course offers students an exceptional opportunity to study photography in Delhi. Well-established and award-winning photography guru will train students to develop their own signature style. This course covers all roles of photography from fashion, wildlife or candid wedding.
This course will prepare students for the professional world and groom them to enter the industry with hands-on practical experience. Team of esteemed Guest Lecturers will help students to understand the commercial aspects of photography.
Programme Structure
Our course is designed in such a way, that our students won’t just learn theoretical part of photography but will also get a practical work experience. The course is divided into three semesters; each semester is divided equally into 4 months. Throughout the year you will get to learn very basic, advanced to very creative techniques of photography.
The first semester is designed for building a sound, basic foundation for Photography Techniques. It will introduce students to the technical and artistic aspects of digital photography – how digital cameras work, how to take good pictures using them, using light and shadow techniques creatively and how to enhance these pictures in the digital darkroom.
The second semester is based on developing digital darkroom skills, various streams of photography – landscape, architectural, fashion, product, wildlife, wedding and journalism. There will be an emphasis on techniques for enhancing/manipulating images digital application and research for Photography and Dark Room Practices.
In your final semester (Developing Portfolio), students will be assigned projects culminating into a professional portfolio that could be used for job opportunities. Various advanced workshops will be planned during your last semester. They will get sufficient work experience as well as real practical exposure.
Understanding your Camera
Students will learn the working of the digital camera, equipment and how to make the most of their cameras through practical studio & location shoots demonstrations. In this module, students will learn about camera controls, ISO, metering, exposure, choosing the right lens and the basics of flash photography. They will also understand how and when to use optional accessories like filters and tripods.
The module will help students to explore the concepts of depth of field, color theory, composition, white-balance functions and gradually attain proficiency in shooting with their digital SLR cameras and standard lenses for still imaging through individual shooting assignments mentored by faculty.
Understanding Light – Studio & Outdoor
In painting colours are the primary too, same in photography; light is the primary tool of the photographer. Students will be trained for, what best setting to use in their camera to get a desired picture, which they have imagined, in their mind. It will be based on natural lighting at location shoots as well as creating your own light source by the help of studio flashes, reflectors and other light sources. Shooting sessions in studio and outdoors will help them to understand the power and potential of light and shadow using natural light, available light and other artificial light sources to illuminate subjects. Students will be encouraged to opt lighting techniques in shooting situations that create exposure challenges such as cloudy days, fog and mist, night photography.
Lighting up Locations
Shooting on locations is always different and more complicated then working in a studio. The significance creative lighting interpretations for shooting models on locations cannot be overstated. Special workshops on location lighting will be the part of this course, which will help students to create more interesting and dynamic compositions and interpretations on locations.
Visiting faculty
Time to time we’ll invite various Indian and international photographers, makeup artists, fashion designers, fashion stylists, and other influential people from the industry who will share their the knowledge and experience they have gained. By looking at work of master photographers, students will be able to learn their techniques and students will get a much clearer picture of, what a designer wants from photographers?
Photo Editing - Digital Darkroom
After a photographer takes a picture it’s very important to work on it, for final touchups; before its handed to a client. So at DCOP we’ll train our student’s basic image touch ups to creative digital art, how to manipulate images using various software’s to achieve desired results. Students will discover using sophisticated sharpening techniques, selectively applying filters, masks, tone, texture and color matching and correction and many more from a professional point of view.
Photography for designers
Visiting fashion designers will take your workshops, so students will have better understanding of photography from designer’s point of view. Students will look through designer’s eyes, what they want to show with the pictures in order to sell their clothes and other accessories.
Photography for Makeup artist
Makeup is a very important tool for photography; so various makeup artists will take the workshop for makeup. Its very important for photographers to know the basis about makeup and what sort of markup to use for which type of lighting. So our students will have the real practical exposure of working in the industry with the professionals.
Photography Business
Like every other business or profession, photography business is booming these days and it comes with a lot of competition in market. Therefore we’ll teach our students how to pitch an idea to the client, process of bidding, cost-effective budgeting, picking locations, obtaining permits, training your models, choosing props, testing, selecting, renting, insuring equipment, invoicing and above all shooting the assignment within the planned time and budget constraints.
Portfolio Development
In the final semesters students are required to prepare their portfolio, which can be done individually or as a group work. A mentor will be assigned to students, to whom they can show their work regularly. Finally the board of photography gurus will access their work.
Studio Membership
After students finish their course, it’s very important that they must find work and start shooting. At Delhi college of Photography we provide free studio rentals for our students for a months and at discounts rates after that period. Therefore they don’t have to spend plenty of money renting a studio or setting up their own.
Career
Career opportunities include professional practice with newspapers, magazines and digital media houses; empanelment with select advertising agencies, brands, corporates, industrial houses; freelance in their area of interest such as fashion photography, advertising, portraiture, architecture, wildlife photography and documentary.
Photographers are at times, paid a certain amount of money for each picture that they shoot or paid an hourly rate or salary. Their earnings or salaries can vary depending on their experience and talent.
